Are you the lover of bikes? Do you want to see more in shorter time?
First you need to know, that there are some different options to do biking near Cusco. Depending on your skills, willingness and wallet possibility, you can choose either mountaineering biking or just relaxing biking tours. If you would like to have an adventure biking tour, or typically mountaineering biking tour, I will rather recommend you to choose one of the companies who specialize in that kind of sports. Then you will not have to be worry about the transport, the problems with the bike on the way (what can happen, if you do more adventure, advanced biking tours) and just you will feel safer, because in that case you will be all the time with a tour guide.
But if you just want to relax on bike, here I have for you suggestions of cool cycling route.
Biking tour Cusco!
As a first bike route I can recommend you is Yuncaypata – Urubamba tour. Do you want to try it? Just follow the instruction given below 🙂
In Cusco you need to take a bus which goes to Pisac. Ask the driver to leave you in the place called Yuncaypata. From here you can start your biking adventure.
From starting piont till Pisac there is almost all the time downhill and asphalt road. Distance around 19,4 km. In that part be prepared for extra neighbours on the road! for sure several buses and cars will pass you.
From Pisac you need to go in direction of Urubamba, but here JUST REMEMBER !!! Do not take the main asphalt road going (road number 28B). There is other more lovely, beautiful, almost free from any vehicles, road on the opposite side of the Urubamba river. And this is the best option to take.
This is definitely not an asphalt road, but at least it is a very well-tamped sand road , so perfect for bikes.
Of course like everywhere, also on that easy road, you can find other, smaller paths. We have tasted some of them, and the results were wonderful. Just not always we could find the way back 🙂
In that case, we had to cross some very small rivers and others people lands 🙂
The distance from Pisac to Urubamba, by asphalt road, is around 64 km. More or less the same distance will be if you will take the sandy road, because it is going parallel to the main one.
If you are already afraid that it is too much, wait! The good thing is that the route is almost all the way flat. There are only some moments where you will have to go up the hill. But these parts are short and not steep. Another good news is that, you can always finish your trip earlier. Just you need to remember that riding by bike on sandy road, not always you will have possibility to catch the bus to come back to Cusco. First you need to look for a bridge and cross the Urubamba river, to get to the main road. The bridges are usually located every some kilometers, so it should not be a problem. If mentioned above distance is to long for you, I recommend you to leave the sandy road in a very nice town Calca.
The distance between Pisac and Calca is only 19 km.
There is also a hot spring available, so you can take a warm bath. If you will stop in Calca, necessary visit local market situated very close to the main square and drink a delicious juice. It is very cheap and refreshing.
The best time to go?
Well, every moment will be perfect, just experiences wil differ a lot. Maybe only in January and February, when the rainy season is the strongest, you can have some difficulties. I was riding my bike on that route in October and in the end of November. The second time we had more rain and more mud, but the view was even more spectacular. Everything was more colourful, so I really enjoyed that trip, although half of it was in rain.
Photos that you see above and below show some of the alternative routes on the road. If you do not like such paths, continue the expedition on the sandy road instead turning to the other smaller.
Soon I will also write about others possibilities, just first need to test them 🙂
